The Sale of my Business

Life is short but can be beautiful...

Life is short but can be beautiful. As we advance in age we realize that we have lived only “an instant”. If we roughly summarize what our lives have been like, we will see that we have spent one-third sleeping, a third watching television and leisure, and a third either studying or working.

After our childhood and youth, life places us in the need to look for our sustenance and work. Full of energy we began to struggle so to procure the income that will allow us to progress, maintain a home, and carve out a position in society. And so, within this dynamic, the years go by and, without realizing it, we reach the chronological age in which we are supposed to retire. It’s been ten, twenty, thirty, forty years or more in which we were immersed in an absorbing routine of work. The time has come to prepare us mentally to enjoy the remaining balance of years that we will luckily live.

If we choose the entrepreneurial path to emerge in life, we should have at this point our own business: a firm that has been forged under our tutelage and with our effort of many years. Reasonably, it has to be the time to sell our creation to a third party or transfer it to our descendants. If there are no willing descendants because they decided to dedicate themselves to more attractive activities than ours, then it is time to prepare our company for sale.

Shoemaker to your shoes …

Since our specialty is to manage a business, but not to sell it, it is the right opportunity to contact a business broker. The broker will guide us on the steps to follow to achieve a successful operation. Without any commitment, because the brokers do not charge a penny until the sale is closed, we will learn some formulas to successfully sell our business. It comprises from the value of the company, to how to present the financial statements, up to the avenues that the broker will use to market the company.

From that initial consultation, it will likely be born a long-term relationship with the broker. While the sale process lasts, the broker will maintain a permanent communication with the business owner, introducing him potential buyers and serving as an agent of the transaction between the buyer and the seller.

For a business owner, hiring a business broker is a good business.

While the broker structures and coordinates the steps for the sale, we can continue to be dedicated to our routine activities at the front of the business. We will have the peace of mind that the broker will know how to handle the issue in a proper and strictly confidential manner.

So, if we are thinking of selling our business, we must first hear the expert opinion of the broker and then decide. Total, if it costs us nothing …
